Fake comparability

The illusion that unlike investments become comparable because they have been placed in the same spreadsheet and given scores.

Also known as: false comparability

Fake comparability appears when fundamentally different types of work are forced through one prioritisation model.

A regulatory update, a software feature and a consulting engagement may have different goals, economics and constraints. Giving each one a score does not remove those differences. It can simply hide them behind a number.
