Glossary term

Opportunity cost

The value of the best alternative given up when people, money or time are committed to one option.

Also known as: trade-off cost

Every meaningful product decision has an opportunity cost.

Accepting a custom project may delay a platform improvement. Funding one growth bet may mean another is never tested. The full cost of a decision includes both the work being funded and the best alternative the organisation can no longer pursue.
