RICE framework

A prioritisation framework that compares ideas using Reach, Impact, Confidence and Effort.

Also known as: RICE, RICE prioritisation, Reach Impact Confidence Effort

RICE adds Reach to the ICE framework.

The usual calculation is:

(Reach × Impact × Confidence) ÷ Effort

Reach estimates how many customers will be affected within a defined period. Impact estimates the expected change. Confidence reflects the strength of the evidence, while Effort estimates the work required.

RICE can expose weak assumptions and inconsistent reasoning. It cannot decide whether an idea fits the strategy or whether two different types of investment should be compared at all.
