Glossary term

Decision rights

An explicit agreement about who makes a decision, who contributes context and who must be informed after it is made.

Also known as: decision ownership, decision authority

Decision rights clarify where authority sits.

They distinguish the person making the decision from people providing expertise, executing the work or being affected by the result. Clear decision rights reduce repeated debates, hidden vetoes and situations where everyone contributes but nobody makes the call.
