Glossary term

Product discovery

The work used to understand a problem, test assumptions and reduce uncertainty before making a larger product investment.

Also known as: discovery, product discovery process

Product discovery helps a team learn before committing too much time or money.

It may involve customer conversations, data analysis, prototypes, experiments, commercial analysis or technical investigation.

Discovery is not a mandatory phase before every piece of work. The amount of discovery should match the uncertainty, cost and risk of the decision.

The goal is not to complete a discovery process. It is to find out what needs to be true before making the next decision.
