Everyone snaps back. It's just a matter of time. The sharp reply is right there, waiting, and it goes straight to the urge to be right.
The instinct to snap is the easier one. The pressure is real, and there are usually people watching to see what you do with it.
The person who doesn't react tends to be the one everyone else looks to. The last word thing is interesting. I've seen someone walk away from an argument having gotten exactly what they came for, and be further from where they wanted to be than when they started.
Reacting does lower you, though. Something about going back and forth on someone else's terms, on their timeline, at whatever temperature they've decided to run the conversation at.
The person in the room who doesn't need to win it is almost always the most interesting one to watch.
